Rev. Sr. Dr. AJIKO Mary Margaret becomes the first Ugandan doctor to attain a PhD in Paediatric Surgery in Uganda!

Rev. Sr. Dr. Mary Margaret AJIKO belonging to the Institute of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu (LSMIG) scooped her PhD. Award in Paediatric Surgery from Karolina Institute in Sweden, becoming the first Ugandan doctor to hold a PhD in Paediatric Surgery. Karolinska Institute is a highly competitive international medical institute whose admission rate stands at 3.9% ranked no. six in the world.

• Lecturer of students of Global surgery of various universities ( UCSF, UCLA, KI, Epstein University, UBC, Calgary, McMaster, Toronto)

• Member of Association of Surgeons of Uganda (ASOU).

• In charge of trauma registry and contact person for Collaboration at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital with a number of universities within and abroad.

• A researcher who has written a good number of proposals and published over 30 scientific papers.

• Chairperson of Rewards and Sanctions at Soroti Regional referral hospital.

While presenting on Paediatric Surgery in Uganda. Rev. Sr. Dr. Mary Margaret Ajiko noted that surgical conditions are common in children and there is need to increase access to surgery.
