Introduction
The Institute of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu was founded in 1936 by Bishop Angelo Negri a Comboni Missionary. When Bishop Angelo Negri came to Northern Uganda he discovered that women and girls were the most marginalized in the society. He had keen interest in the education of women.
Establishments at earlier stage
He
decided to open up educational institutions to empower women and the
girl child in Northern region and beyond. He established:
1. Mary Immaculate Primary School in 1934
2. Sacred Junior School now Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School
3. Girls’ Teacher Training College (TTC) now Christ the King PTC.
The Sisters are engaged in education at various levels through Pre-primary, Primary, Post-primary, Tertiary and University.
The
aim of the Founder was to care for the most vulnerable of the society
through Christian education in schools. However, the sisters are
involved in various activities giving a broader spectrum for
evangelization, henceforth, besides teaching, we work in health units,
among us there are lawyers, counselors, social workers, journalists,
accountants, catechists, engineers among others.
Founder's Message
Our founder left us with this message to carry forward in our work of evangelization:
"For
the Congregation to accept another kind of work, let it choose first
that work which benefits the poor, those who need more help, those who
are deserted without care, or preparing food for those who are
neglected, those whom nobody cares for. They have to be helped by the
spirit if sacrifice and to show them love plainly as the love of Jesus
urges them to..."
